If you’re a parent in Fairbanks, Alaska, this week you’re going to be at the Tanana Valley State Fair. That’s what we do in August. Yes, it rains; then, it’s too hot. Yes, it’s damn expensive. Yes, it’s crowded. But it’s fun.
We went today. Beautiful weather, crazy fair food, and Cedar passing as tall enough to get on the rides. We visited the standards: the hand-dipped ice cream bars, the petting zoo, the stage shows. More on all that later.
What I really need to pass on to subarctic mamas is the Parent Pit Stop. It’s a room with changing tables, toys for toddlers, carpets for crawlers (or wobbly walkers), and comfortable chairs for breastfeeding moms. Sponsored by the Fairbanks Breastfeeding Coalition and staffed with volunteers, it’s the perfect place to take a break if you’re pushing a full stroller around the fair.
Check out the offerings:
Definitely the best changing tables at the fairgrounds. I stopped in twice. Cedar loved the play bin filled with dry rice and had fun riding the rocking horse. I appreciated the comfortable glider to sit in while nursing Coral. On my first visit, we were the only guests. The second time around I was joined by three other moms nursing babies. Thanks for providing a breastfeeding friendly space.
If you’re at the fair this week and your little one is getting fussy, stop in. They’re just over the bridge that leads to the midway, near the Blood Bank of Alaska and the big fried zucchini, onion ring, french fries vendor.
